Laurie McClintock and Culpeper Chunn's "The Whispering Thing" appeared as a two-part serial in the April and May 1923 issues of Weird Tales. This LitLab edition joins the two installments into one continuous reading text.

The April installment's continuation notice and the May installment's recap are historical magazine apparatus, so they are recorded in the source audit but omitted from the main reader. Chapter VI begins in April and resumes in May; here it reads as one chapter, followed by Chapters VII, VIII and IX.

The visual edition treats the terror as fog, breath, whisper, clue and detective staging. It avoids graphic corpse spectacle and keeps the final mechanism out of early-reader artwork.
