Laurie McClintock & Culpeper Chunn

Credited Weird Tales Collaborators
The byline for “The Whispering Thing” names two collaborators: Laurie McClintock and Culpeper Chunn. The story ran in two consecutive 1923 issues of Weird Tales. Bibliographic records identify Culpeper Chunn as the pen name of Seymour Cunningham Chunn (1889–1927); another Weird Tales story, “Doctor X,” appeared under that name later in 1923. The catalog also records Chunn’s book Plotting the Short Story. Those sources give one collaborator a traceable identity and a small publication record.
Laurie McClintock is much less documented. The sources reviewed establish the name on the joint story and do not securely connect it to a fuller personal biography. This page therefore treats the authorship as a collaboration rather than assigning the whole work to Chunn or guessing who McClintock was. The two-part serial follows the detective Jules Péret through a mystery that builds across the April and May installments. Its publication history is unusually useful evidence: the same paired byline appears in both parts, while later records clarify only one collaborator’s name. The surviving record leaves that imbalance visible.
