Before you begin.

Aristide Valentin, celebrated head of the Paris police, has invited a remarkable company to dine at his house beside the Seine: an English ambassador and his family, an Irish officer, an American millionaire, a French doctor, and Father Brown. The estate seems built against intrusion. Its high walls leave only one entrance, and that entrance is watched.

Then a stranger is discovered in the moonlit garden. The company must account for a crime inside a place no outsider could enter and no guest could leave. An empty scabbard, a sword found beyond the wall, conflicting identities, and five apparently insurmountable questions turn Valentin’s orderly household into a maze of inference.

First published in 1910, “The Secret Garden” is the second Father Brown story. Chesterton makes architecture part of the mystery: every wall that appears to secure the truth also conceals an assumption. Father Brown’s method remains quiet and humane, but the answer tests the boundary between reason and fanaticism.
