Julian Kilman's "The Affair of the Man in Scarlet" sends a royal coach into a medieval French village where an old headsman's family omen, a condemned court beauty and a rescue plan all converge on one red house.

This LitLab miniature starts at the story heading in the April 1923 issue of Weird Tales and stops before "The Hideous Face." The source has no authored chapters, so the reader remains a continuous story while the visual edition uses three private reading movements for unlock timing only.

The plates keep the horror non-graphic. The red house, the sword's omen, the royal writ, the marriage statute and the window signal carry the dread; the final violence stays off the page.
