This compact tale begins in the court of Al-Maamun, where a request for something rare opens into a remembered chamber of music, wit and argument. Mohammed of Bassorah tells of a wealthy man from Al-Yaman, six accomplished musicians, and a contest in which song, learning and desire are braided together.

The historical source uses language about complexion, beauty and servitude that modern readers may find harsh or demeaning. This illustrated edition preserves the literary encounter while treating every figure as a dignified adult performer and thinker, avoiding caricature, humiliation and spectacle.

Read it as a courtly miniature: a chamber lit by lamps, a series of answering voices, and a final gesture in which wealth, longing and generosity are tested against one another.
