Before you begin.

A young merchant of Khorasan inherits wealth, counsel, and very little wisdom about what desire can cost. In the market he meets Zumurrud, whose beauty draws every eye but whose intelligence is the sharper force. Their story begins with a public choice and moves through household trust, loss, disguise, travel, and the strange machinery of justice.

This tale comes from the world of The Arabian Nights, in the English rendering associated with Richard F. Burton. It belongs to a storytelling tradition where markets, chambers, roads, and courts are never merely settings: they are tests. A key can become a hinge of fate; a curtain can carry warning; a banquet can become a tribunal.

The illustrations before the story introduce that world without solving it for you.
