Ghanim, a young merchant's son in Damascus, inherits goods marked for Baghdad. His journey leads from the household and the bazar to a closed city gate and an unexpected mystery beyond it. Let the tale reveal what the chest contains, and why its discovery matters.

The opening gallery introduces eighteen distinct character designs, followed by painted settings, interpretive plans, relationships and everyday objects. Facial features and room arrangements are artistic interpretations, not descriptions claimed verbatim from the source. Geographic routes are schematic where the tale does not specify an itinerary. Food and drink studies gather items from different episodes rather than reconstructing a single banquet.

Burton's English retains the language and attitudes of its period, including offensive racial descriptions and accounts of enslavement, violence and sexual abuse. The illustrations avoid caricature and graphic depictions of that material. The embedded tales remain within the narrative sequence.

The three collective character sheets come before individual profiles and studies. Scene illustrations and chapter recaps accompany the later reading experience rather than disclosing its resolution in this introduction.

Editorial Note on This Adaptation

This is an adapted edition. In Bukhayt's inset tale in Night Thirty-nine, one paragraph containing explicit sexual descriptions involving children has been replaced by a brief, non-graphic editorial summary. The replacement is clearly marked in the narrative. It is newly written editorial text, not the wording of Richard F. Burton.

The surrounding narrative and chapter divisions have been retained. The same adaptation appears in the platform reader, PDF and EPUB. The illustrations do not depict the explicit material.
