The Riddle of the Sands
Before You Begin
Before you begin.
Carruthers expects a quiet sailing holiday when he accepts Davies’s invitation. Instead, a letter, a small yacht, and a trail of odd encounters draw the two men into a careful investigation of the North Sea’s shifting channels and sandbanks.
First published in 1903, The Riddle of the Sands turns navigation into suspense. The Dulcibella is small, the water is shallow, and the weather keeps changing. Charts, soundings, fog, and tide all matter. Childers lets the reader work beside Carruthers and Davies, noticing how a vessel might move through waters that look empty to anyone who does not know them.
The novel appeared during a period of intense British concern about naval power and the balance of forces in the North Sea. Its preface, epilogue, and postscript make that context part of the book’s form. This edition keeps those sections with the complete story and preserves the original twenty-eight chapter divisions.
The illustrations follow the same practical geography: a working yacht, period navigation tools, exposed sand, and the low coast of the Frisian Islands. Each recap follows one original chapter and unlocks only after that chapter has been read.
