During a boating holiday through the narrow rivers of eastern England, Father Brown and Flambeau follow a cryptic green-ink invitation to Reed Island. There they find a long bamboo house, low windows alternating with mirrors, an imperturbable old servant known as Mr. Paul, and a housekeeper whose silence carries the weight of an old family history.

The apparent prince is polished, theatrical, and curiously at home in every role. Then a boat approaches with six oars, a black case, and a man who has crossed Europe to demand a reckoning. The island's calm geometry becomes a stage for honour, disguise, and delayed retribution.

First published in 1910, "The Sins of Prince Saradine" is the eighth Father Brown story. Chesterton turns the isolated waterways into a moral puzzle about mistaken identity and the danger of allowing enemies to complete one another's designs.
