At the Tropical Gem, a banana plantation beside Honduras’s Ulúa River, unease moves through the workday. Illness, rumors and departures trouble manager Bart Condon, while the jungle trails lead toward a meeting hidden from the plantation below.

Artemus Calloway’s “Jungle Death” appeared in the April 1923 issue of Weird Tales. It draws on the pulp tradition of a remote setting, mounting suspicion and a secret uncovered in the dark. Its supernatural language belongs to that period’s fiction; the people and cultures it invokes should not be read as documentary description.
