On a bitter winter evening, Father Brown and Flambeau walk through a silent forest toward the monument of General Sir Arthur St. Clare. Britain remembers St. Clare as a heroic commander betrayed in a distant South American campaign, his broken sword preserved as the emblem of an honourable defeat.

Yet Father Brown begins with a deceptively simple question: where does a wise man hide a pebble? As the two travellers revisit an inscription, three incomplete testimonies, a missing officer, and the strange geometry of a battlefield, the familiar legend starts to change shape.

First published in 1910, "The Sign of the Broken Sword" is the eleventh Father Brown story. Chesterton turns military memory into a moral detective problem, asking how a nation constructs a hero - and how one hidden act may be concealed inside a much larger public tragedy.
