Otis Adelbert Kline's serial belongs to the first year of Weird Tales, when scientific language, spiritualist experiment, rural rumor, and old supernatural vocabulary could all occupy the same room. The story opens as a mystery of bereavement and inheritance, then narrows into a night watch around a closed casket. The illustrations in this edition keep that first-reader uncertainty: the images show what Billy can fear, observe, or misunderstand before the explanation arrives.
