Before you begin.

A prosperous Cairo merchant longs for a son and receives Ala al-Din, a child whose beauty, inheritance and family standing quickly make him visible to the city around him. What begins inside a merchant household soon opens into caravans, hidden rooms, accusations and the judgement of rulers.

The tale belongs to the broad court-and-road world of the Nights: Cairo, desert travel and Abbasid Baghdad meet in a story about trust, appetite, false testimony and restored fortune. Objects matter here: bales of goods, doors, seals, garments, contracts and letters keep carrying proof from one scene to the next.

This edition preserves Richard F. Burton's 1885 English translation and arrangement as a historical text. Its language and assumptions are part of that record. The illustrations follow the tale's people, places and material world while avoiding cruelty as spectacle.
