Byline in Weird Tales, April 1923
The name Ray McGillivray is attached to ‘The Forty Jars’ in the April 1923 issue of Weird Tales. The story follows an archaeological expedition in northwestern China and was promoted in the preceding issue before it appeared. That magazine credit is the firm center of the record available for this page: the byline, title, issue and story text can all be checked in the surviving pages.
Later specialist bibliography has suggested that Ray McGillivray may have been a pseudonym used by Anthony M. Rud, who also wrote for the magazine. The evidence does not settle the question, so the two names remain separate in this edition. No verified portrait or fuller personal biography has been tied to the McGillivray byline here. The careful account is consequently a publication history rather than an imagined life: it records where the name appeared, preserves the possibility raised by later research, and leaves the identity unresolved. The adventure’s jars, desert route and archaeological discoveries belong to the story world and should not be transferred into a biography of its author.
