Paul Suter
1884-1970 · United States
Weird Tales contributor
The byline beneath “Beyond the Door” in the April 1923 issue of Weird Tales reads Paul Suter. The magazine’s later letter column prints his signature as J. Paul Suter, and Wikisource’s author index identifies him as Joseph Paul Suter, born in 1884 and deceased in 1970. The same bibliography records a continuing connection to the magazine: “The Guard of Honor” and “Prisoners of the Dead” followed in 1923, with further stories appearing into the 1930s.
A letter to editor Edwin Baird, printed in June 1923, offers a rare contemporary glimpse of Suter’s working relationship with the magazine. He wrote to thank the editorial staff for preserving the gradual effect he had built into “Beyond the Door,” and said that horror stories were the work he most wanted to write. The issue also announced his next story, “The Guard of Honor.” Later entries include “The Superior Judge” and the two-part “The Abyss Under the World.” These records establish a sustained pulp-fiction career, while leaving most details of Suter’s personal life undocumented. This biography stays with that verifiable publication trail.
